Hydraulic Modelling
CWE has a significant level of expertise in the specialist field of hydraulic modelling. CWE understands the need to produce high quality and accurate sewer models for its clients. We place emphasis on the importance of tailoring commissions to individual client requirements and ensure deliverables are met with a maximum level of integrity and efficiency.
Through the utilisation of the latest modelling technology such as Wallingford Software’s Infoworks™ CS, Mapinfo™ and Infonet™, CWE offers the following range of modelling services.
- Drainage Area Planning
- Development Impact Assessments
- Development of Type I, II and III Models
- Model Build & Verification
- Model Maintenance
- Real Time Control (RTC) Modelling
- Model Amalgamation
- Infiltration Assessments
- Design Support Modelling
- Model Auditing
- CSO Analysis
- Time Series Rainfall Analysis
- Feasibility Studies
- Design Rainfall Analysis
- Solution Development
- Value Management
- Geographical Information Systems
CWE have delivered a large number of successful modelling commissions for clients such as Scottish Water, Scottish Water Horizons, Atkins and OneSource. This extensive and varied level of catchment experience and the utilisation of a wide range of models have made CWE a consultant of choice for many clients.
CWE has experience from small hydraulic models to large integrated catchment models covering large populated and complex urban areas such as; Glasgow, Edinburgh & Aberdeen. The hydraulic models addressed, have ranged from a few hundred nodes to more than 20,000 nodes in size, with population ranging from a few hundred to the hundreds of thousands within Scotland’s major cities.
CWE has a significant variety of catchment expertise and has been involved in over 50 different catchment zones to date undertaking various commissions for Atkins on behalf of OneSource/Scottish Water. Involvement has varied from the conceptual planning stages, MBV, Needs to the final optioneering and value management stages.
The complexities of the models built and/or utilised by CWE also covers an extensive range, from the simplest surface water model to large integrated catchment models incorporating complex Real Time Control (RTC) modelling.
CWE works closely with Asset Planners and implement a consistent flood resolution and environmental strategy when it comes to solution development. During the solution development stage of a commission CWE strive for gravity, low maintenance solutions as opposed to pumped options wherever possible. The consideration of the whole life of an asset and associated economical and environmental costs is core to the development of CWE’s deliverables.
As with strategic development planning CWE believes regular consultation with Asset Planners, Network Analysts, SEPA and other third parties is core to the development of the “ideal” solution to suit all major stakeholders.
A key aspect in addressing the environmental impacts is the assessment of catchment CSO’s through the utilisation of Time Series Rainfall (TSR) data. CWE has consistently addressed the issues relating to the incorporation of developments into heavily constrained catchments and through the utilisation of the TSR analysis has achieved a variety of catchment solutions to ensure major developments are able to proceed.
Strategic planning of holistic solution development and environmental needs are priorities that are addressed foremost. These aspects are actively promoted and have been consistently delivered to clients.
Data Collection & Survey Management
CWE understand the importance of high quality data collection and consider it to be at the very foundation of every successful commission.
As part of the modelling and design process CWE recognise the need for excellent quality asset and flow survey data from the project outset. This elment is undertaken by by our subsidiary company Caledonia Drainage Solutions Ltd (CDS). CDS ensure that the quality of the data collected is maximised from the commencement of the project.
CDS offer a wide variety of data collection services to meet the scope/ requirements of both hydraulic modelling and design related commissions. Please click here for further information.
CWE provide the site supervision element to ensure maximum level data integrity. Our service includes the scoping, planning, implementation of all types of survey works.

CWE has developed a number of survey management systems covering all aspects which significantly reduce the time spent on data analysis, particularly with respect to the flow survey element for rainfall and specific event selection. CWE closely follows the Wastewater Planning Users Group (WAPUG) Code of Practice (CoP) to ensure high quality data returns in accordance with a variety of (Drainage Area Study) DAS Quality systems specifications.
The pre-installation flow survey and reactive flow monitoring management is recognised as a major part of the MBV process, CWE recognises the importance of optimising the locations in a sewer network in order to ensure maximum quality of data is delivered and therefore reducing time required during the verification process.
